The area of consumer concerns to be addressed in this course involve a study of money management, wise use of credit, saving and investing, understanding the economy, insurance, taxes, consumer laws, financial management and making well informed purchasing decisions. No other course is more relevant to every day living. This course wilol satisfy the student's State of Illinois Consumer Education requirement.

Description: ACCOUNTING I ( 2 semesters, 1.0 credit, prerequisite B180 or consent of instructor) Accounting I is a skill level course that is of value to all students pursuing a strong background in business, marketing, and management. This course includes planned learning experiences that develop initial and basic skills used in systematically computing, classifying, recording, verifying, and maintaining numerical data involved in financial and product control records including the paying and receiving of money. Instruction includes information on keeping financial records, summarizing them for convenient interpretation, and analyzing them to provide assistance to management for decision making. Accounting computer applications are integrated throughout the course where applicable. In addition to stressing basic fundamentals and terminology of accounting, instruction provides initial understanding of the preparation of budgets and financial reports, operation of related business machines and equipment, and career opportunities in the accounting field. Processing employee benefits may also be included. Practice sets with business papers may be used to emphasize actual business records management.
Accounting II

Description: Accounting II is a skill level course that builds upon the foundation established in Accounting I. This course is planned to help students to develop deeper knowledge of the principles of accounting with more emphasis being placed on financial statements and accounting records. It is a study of previously learned principles as they apply to the more complicated types of business organizations: partnerships, corporations, branches, etc. The student may become familiar with such specialized fields of accounting as cost accounting, tax accounting, payroll accounting and others. Simulated fields of accounting as cost accounting, tax accounting, payroll accounting and other simulated business conditions may be provided through the use of practice sets. Skills are developed in the entry, retrieval, and statistical analysis of business data using computers for accounting business applications. This course provides a technical background for college-bound students who plan a business curriculum as well as those who wish vocational preparation.
Computer Concepts and Applications

Description: Computer Concepts and Applications is an orientation-level course a student takes in his/her vocational education sequence of courses to develop awareness and understanding of the APPLICATION of electronic data processing concepts, software and equipment to accomplish tasks typically performed by employees in the business, marketing, and management occupation. The first semester of this course focuses specifically on the use of Microsoft Word. The second semester of Computer Concepts and Applications focuses specifically on the use of Microsoft Excel Microsoft PowerPoint.
Website Design

Description: This course will have as its focus the general principles behind website design. The critical concepts covered will give the student a fundamental knowledge of the techniques used to design a webpage and of how web pages are combined to make a website. Microsoft FrontPage will be the primary software used for posting up the page. Other software may be covered including Dream Weaver and PageMaker.
Desktop Publishing

Product-Oriented Marketing

Description: Through this course students will learn about the selection of target markets; the controllable variables of the marketing mix including product, place, price, promotion; and the uncontrollable variables including legal environment, economic environment, resources and objectives, cultural environment, and the existing business structure. In addition, topics such as identifying markets, writing and displaying ads, selecting media, allocating budgets, and related advertising areas will also be covered. Particular emphasis is placed upon identifying the needs of the local advertiser and developing a unified campaign toward those needs.

Description: Information processing I is a skill level course that includes the concepts and terminology related to the people, equipment and procedures of information processing as well as skill development in the use of information processing equipment. Students will operate computer equipment to prepare memos, letters, reports, and forms. Students will create rough drafts, correct copy, process incoming and outgoing telephone calls and mail, and transmit and receive messages electronically. Students will create, input, and update databases; copy, rename, move, and delete files, and perform backup procedures. In addition, students will prepare files to merge, as well as create mailing labels and envelopes from merge files. Students will learn to locate and retrieve information from hard copy and electronic sources, and prepare masters for a presentation using presentation software. Students will apply proper grammar, punctuation, spelling and proofreading practices. Accuracy will be emphasized. Workplace skills as well as communication skills (thinking, listening, composing, revising, editing, and speaking) will be taught and integrated throughout this course.
