Arthur Board of Education

Regular Meeting – March 9, 2011

 

                   The regular meeting of the Arthur Board of Education was called to order by President Scott Daily at 7:00 p.m. in the Unit Office with the following members and administrators present:  Scott Daily, Doug Kitchen, Steffanie Seegmiller, Ronnie Cole, Linda Collins, Monica Miller, Mike Hilgenberg, Buck Condill, Gary Alexander and Travis Wilson.

                   Communications – None.

Public Comment

                   Iris Dicks, as a Committee of Five member, thanked the volunteers who will be distributing brochures/signs for the upcoming Annexation vote.  She also thanked the people of both communities for their donations of $2,400 for expenses related to distribution of information. 

                   Motion was made by Monica Miller, seconded by Doug Kitchen, to approve the minutes of the February 16, 2011 meeting.  Motion carried unanimously by roll call vote.

                   Motion was made by Mike Hilgenberg, seconded by Linda Collins, to approve the monthly bills as presented.  Motion carried unanimously by roll call vote.

                   Motion was made by Linda Collins, seconded by Mike Hilgenberg, to approve the monthly Treasurer’s Report as presented.  Motion carried unanimously by roll call vote.

SECONDARY REPORT

                   Principal Alexander discussed the following items in his report:

·         Activity Fund

·         DAR/SAR – Congratulations to Alicia Dickerson and Mike Rosenbaum on receiving this recognition

·         LOVC All Conference/Boys Basketball
- Boys – Jesse Daily – 1st Team
- Girls – Ashley Tabb – 2nd Team
- Congratulations to the boys and Coach Schuring for making it to the Regional Championship

·         Scholastic Bowl – Congratulations to the Varsity Scholastic Bowl for winning the first match in the Regional

·         Career Day – Thank you to Mrs. Farris for organizing the day

·         3 point Shootout – Congratulations to Mike Rosenbaum who advanced to the Sectional 3 point shootout contest.

·         ISAT Testing – Thank you to the 7th and 8th grade students and teachers for their effort on testing.  Thank you to Mrs. Farris for organizing the testing.

·         IHSA Solo/Ensemble Contest

·         Student Council Blood Drive – March 17, 2011

·         Junior High Volleyball – Congratulations to the 7th and 8th grade teams, Coach Harrison and Coach Vanausdoll on a fun and exciting season

·         Douglas County Spelling Bee Champion – Bradley Miller

·         Calendar of Events:

- March 12 - Global Festival

ELEMENTARY REPORT

                    Principal Condill discussed the following items in his report:

·         Spelling Bee – February 23, 10:00 a.m. at Arcola
- Congratulations to our participants
- Bradley Miller won the County Bee
- Thank you to Mrs. Sutherland and Mrs. Bevis

·         ISAT’s – February 28 – March 4
- Grades 3-6 Completed the tests
- Thanks to the teachers for organizing their testing times/thanks to students for taking the tests seriously

·         Open House/Book Fair
- March 24, 5:30 – 8:00 p.m.
- Fourth grade will have their Wax Museum

·         Iditarod
- Fourth grade follows this race
- Display in the hall shows the course with writings from students

·         Dr. Seuss Day
- March 11 – Grade school students will visit JH/HS students to read and discuss books
- All students will participate in a special musical performance about reading good books
- Green Eggs and Ham for Lunch

·         5th/6th Boys and Girls Basketball
- Thanks to coaches Jodi Kauffman, Meredith Webb, Mike Kingery, and Kurt Hall for their time and effort
- 5th Grade girls team placed 2nd in Villa Grove Tournament
- 6th Grade girls team placed 3rd in Villa Grove Tournament
- Thanks to Mr. Whelan and his team of sideline reporters that submitted articles to the Graphic, detailing 5/6 girls games

·         Book Totals
- Goal:  25,000 – Getting close!
- Reward – Movie/game rooms at grade school for an afternoon

·         April Board Meeting
- Amish Representatives
- Agenda items – anything you’d like to see let me know

·         St. Jude Math-a-Thon
- 72 students participated
- $4,600 raised so far

·         Geography Bee – Macy Hollingsworth advanced to state competition

·         Calendar of Events:
- Feb. 28 – Mar. 11 – ISAT’s and make-up tests
- March 11 – Dr. Seuss Day
- March 17 – Report Cards
- March 24 – Open House/Book Fair/Wax Museum

 

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

 

                   Superintendent Wilson discussed the following items in his report:

 

·         Projections Sheet
- EAV growth
- Static average daily attendance
- Reduced transportation reimbursement
- Federal ARRA and jobs money expires
- Replacing teacher retirements at a savings
- Rising cost of Special Education
- ADA Block grant and Reading Improvement grant eliminated

·         Articles in Packet

·         Tax Rate Table

 

Press Plus Policy Issue 75 – This is a first reading.  Included in the

Packet was an Update Memo.  The Second reading for adoption will be on the April board agenda.

 

                   2010/2011 Amended Calendar – We will amend the 2010-11 Calendar in April.

 

                   Motion was made by Linda Collins, seconded by Mike Hilgenberg, to accept the resolution of the final recommendations from the Committee of Ten.  Motion carried unanimously by roll call vote.

 

 

 

 

Board Comment

 

                   Steffanie Seegmiller asked about Board Member involvement in distribution of annexation signs and brochures.  Superintendent Wilson had checked with our legal representative and he cannot find a problem with board members on helping with distribution of signs/brochures. 

 

                   Closed Session – Motion was made by Mike Hilgenberg, seconded by Monica Miller, to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing employment of district personnel.  Motion carried unanimously by roll call vote.

 

                   Motion was made by Monica Miller, seconded by Steffanie Seegmiller, to return to open session.  Motion carried unanimously by roll call vote.

 

                   Motion was made by Linda Collins, seconded by Mike Hilgenberg, to approve the closed session minutes.  Motion carried unanimously by roll call vote.

 

                   Motion was made by Linda Collins, seconded by Steffanie Seegmiller, to employ Emily Kauffman as Assistant Track Coach.   Motion carried unanimously by roll call vote.

 

                   Motion was made by Mike Hilgenberg, seconded by Linda Collins, to place Stephen McClarey and Kristin Nall on tenure.  Motion carried unanimously by roll call vote.
